Even if you do not own an electric vehicle yet, the cabling and switchboard decisions you make during a build are hard and expensive to change later. A little planning now can save a major retrofit down the track.

Conduit and cabling: the cheap insurance
The single most cost-effective future-proofing step is to run conduit from the switchboard to the likely charger location, usually in the garage or carport, while walls and slabs are still open. Even if you do not install a charger now, an empty conduit means a future install is a quick cable pull rather than chasing walls or cutting concrete.
Where the budget allows, running the cable itself, or at least sizing the conduit generously, gives even more flexibility. Think about where a car will actually park and which side the charge port sits, so the cable run is sensible.
A few extra minutes of planning pays off here. Size the conduit a step larger than you think you need, so a heavier cable can be pulled through later if you move to faster charging or three-phase. Add a draw string while the conduit is empty, leave a little slack at each end, and mark the route on the as-built drawings so nobody drills into it years later.
