NatHERS Assessment
Accredited NatHERS thermal performance ratings for new homes, alterations and additions - modelled in HERO software and ready for council or your certifier.
The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) measures how much energy a home needs to stay comfortable. Since the May 2023 update to the National Construction Code (NCC 2022), new homes in NSW must achieve a minimum 7-star thermal performance rating plus a separate Whole-of-Home energy budget. Our HERA-registered assessors model your design, identify the most cost-effective path to compliance, and issue a NatHERS Certificate you can lodge with confidence.
What a NatHERS assessment covers
We build a 3D thermal model of your dwelling and simulate a full year of weather for your specific NatHERS climate zone. The model accounts for orientation, glazing, insulation, thermal mass, zoning, ceiling height and air movement to calculate the heating and cooling energy the home will need.
When you need one
A NatHERS Certificate is the most common way to satisfy the thermal comfort requirements of the NCC and, in NSW, feeds into your BASIX Certificate. You will generally need one for a new dwelling, a major alteration or addition, a knock-down rebuild, or a dual-occupancy or townhouse development.
What’s included
- Full NatHERS thermal model in accredited HERO software
- Star rating out of 10 with heating & cooling load breakdown
- Whole-of-Home assessment (NCC 2022) where required
- Clear, prioritised recommendations to reach 7 stars
- Stamped NatHERS Certificate for lodgement
- One round of revisions if your design changes
Assessed under the NatHERS protocol administered by DCCEEW, using accredited software (HERO) in line with the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 Volume Two and NSW variations.
The process
How it works
Send your plans
Email architectural plans (floor plans, elevations, sections, window schedule) and site details.
We model & advise
We run the assessment and, if you fall short of 7 stars, tell you exactly what to change - glazing, insulation or shading.
You approve
We confirm the specification with you so the certificate matches what gets built.
Certificate issued
You receive your NatHERS Certificate in 3-4 days (24-hour express available).
FAQ
NatHERS Assessment - your questions answered
New homes must reach a minimum 7-star NatHERS rating under NCC 2022, alongside a separate Whole-of-Home energy use budget. Some council or BASIX pathways may require higher.
Our standard turnaround is 3-4 business days from receiving complete plans. A 24-hour express service is available for an additional fee.
NatHERS rates the thermal performance of the building fabric. In NSW, BASIX is the overarching certificate that covers energy, thermal comfort and water - and a NatHERS rating is one accepted way to meet the BASIX thermal comfort target.
Floor plans, elevations, sections, a window/door schedule and the site address. The more detail on construction materials and glazing, the more accurate the first pass.
That is normal on a first run. We give you a prioritised list of the cheapest, least-disruptive changes - usually glazing upgrades, added insulation or external shading - to lift the rating.
