Section J Assessment

NCC Section J energy efficiency assessments and JV3 modelling for commercial and mixed-use buildings.

Section J of the National Construction Code (Volume One) sets the energy efficiency requirements for commercial (Class 2-9) buildings. We provide both the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) pathway and JV3 verification modelling to demonstrate compliance for the building fabric, glazing, services and lighting.

DtS and JV3 pathways

Where a building doesn’t fit neatly within the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, JV3 performance modelling compares your design against a reference building to prove an equal or better outcome - often unlocking more design freedom for glazing and facades.

What’s included

  • Section J Deemed-to-Satisfy assessment
  • JV3 performance-based verification where beneficial
  • Fabric, glazing, services & lighting compliance
  • Report suitable for certifier and council
Australian standards

Assessed under NCC 2022 Volume One, Section J, including JV3 verification using approved simulation methods.

FAQ

Section J Assessment - your questions answered

Residential Class 1 dwellings in NSW use BASIX. Commercial and many Class 2 apartment buildings require Section J (with BASIX still applying to the residential portions). We can advise which applies to your project.

JV3 is a performance-based verification method that models your actual design against a compliant reference building, often allowing more glazing or architectural flexibility than the Deemed-to-Satisfy path.
