BASIX for Swimming Pools and Spas in NSW
In short

A new pool or spa over 40,000 litres triggers BASIX on its own. Here is what the certificate requires and how to comply.

Many owners are surprised to learn that a swimming pool or spa can trigger BASIX even without a house project attached. If your new pool or spa holds more than 40,000 litres, a certificate is required. Here is what that involves.

When a pool needs BASIX

A new pool or spa with a capacity over 40,000 litres requires a BASIX Certificate. Smaller plunge pools and spas under that threshold generally do not, though they may still be captured if built as part of a larger project that needs BASIX anyway.

What the certificate looks at

  • Water. Measures to reduce top-up and backwash water, such as a pool cover.
  • Energy. Efficient pumps and equipment, and how the pool is heated if at all.

A pool cover is the standout measure. It cuts evaporation dramatically, reduces chemical use and, where the pool is heated, slashes the energy needed to keep it warm.

Pool heating choices

Heating Energy impact Notes
Unheated None Simplest path
Solar pool heating Low Efficient where roof space allows
Heat pump Moderate Efficient electric heating
Gas heater High Fast but energy-hungry

Keeping pool compliance simple

A cover plus an efficient pump satisfies most pool certificates comfortably. If you plan to heat the pool, choosing solar or a heat pump over gas keeps the energy side clean. We sort this as part of your overall BASIX so there is one coordinated certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Does a plunge pool need BASIX? Only if it exceeds 40,000 litres or forms part of a project that already requires BASIX.

Is a pool cover mandatory? It is not always required, but it is usually the cheapest way to meet the targets.
