Passive Solar Design for Sydney Homes

Passive solar design uses the sun, shade and materials to keep a home comfortable for free. Here is how to apply it to a Sydney block.
The cheapest energy is the energy you never use. Passive solar design harnesses the sun in winter, blocks it in summer and uses the building itself to even out temperatures. Applied well, it can deliver a high NatHERS rating before you spend a dollar on upgrades.
The four principles
- Orientation. Face living areas and main glazing north to capture low winter sun.
- Shading. Use eaves and external shading sized to block high summer sun while letting winter sun in.
- Thermal mass. Materials like concrete slabs and masonry store warmth and release it slowly.
- Insulation and sealing. Keep the conditioned air where you want it.
Why north matters in Sydney
In the southern hemisphere the winter sun tracks low across the northern sky and the summer sun rises high. A north-facing window with a correctly sized eave lets winter sun warm the room and then shades that same window in summer. It is geometry doing the work of a heater and an awning at no running cost.
Designing for the Sydney climate
Sydney is a mixed climate, so the goal is balance: enough winter sun for warmth, enough shade and cross-ventilation for summer. Operable windows positioned for breezes reduce the need for air conditioning, while thermal mass on the slab steadies the indoor temperature through hot and cold spells.
Common mistakes
- Large west-facing windows with no shade.
- Living areas pushed to the south of the block.
- Eaves too shallow to shade summer sun.
- Heavy materials placed where the sun never reaches them.
Frequently asked questions
Does passive design cost more? No. It is mostly about arranging what you are already building. The savings come in lower bills and an easier path to 7 stars.
What if my block faces the wrong way? Good design still helps. We work with the orientation you have to get the most from it.
